Why Don Aweau Loves Hawaii

Posted on May 27, 2009

Don Aweau, Founder of Hawaii Fishing Fanatic blog tells us why they love Hawaii.

I love fishing and the Big Isle has always held a special place in my heart. I know this has to be short thus I liked to give a little “toot”  for my favorite fishing grounds in hopes that our visitors will maybe visit Kona not just for its people, beauty, coffee but also for its world-famous fishing. Like I always say, The Big Isle for Big Smiles!

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii is renowned as a fishing destination. The blue waters offshore offer visitors a chance of hooking into a plethora of greatly sought-after species as the blue marlin (au) and the yellowfin tuna (ahi). Other species as well can also be caught offshore like the dorado (mahimahi), wahoo (ono) and three varieties of tuna (albacore, bigeye and skipjack).

A spectacular fight and a lifetime of memories can be had in a matter of minutes. It is said, that Kona is the marlin capital of the world and the annual Hawaii International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) held annually every late July is proof positive that marlin roam the Hawaiian waters in abundance. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the HIBT will be hosting anglers from all over the world at their chance for a world-record, awards, and bragging rights. The Golden Anniversary of the HIBT will be a tournament to remember and it starts July 18th-July 25th, 2009.
